About
Vanilla, derived from the vanilla orchid, is valued for its potential to evoke feelings of relaxation, warmth, and comfort, with use in aromatherapy, making it a popular choice for promoting emotional well-being and stress relief. Additionally, vanilla is often incorporated into blends aimed at enhancing sensuality and intimacy due to its reputed aphrodisiac properties. In perfumery, vanilla absolute is prized for its sweet and creamy aroma, which adds depth, richness, and complexity to fragrance compositions. It serves as a beloved base note in many perfumes, imparting a sense of warmth and sophistication.
Vanilla absolute and vanilla oleoresin, whilst are both derived from the same orchid, differ in their extraction methods and composition. This Vanilla absolute is extracted using solvent extraction techniques, specifically targeting the aromatic compounds of the vanilla bean. This yields a highly concentrated liquid with a more intense fragrance compared to vanilla oleoresin. While both are prized for their aromatic properties, vanilla oleoresin tends to have a more complex and nuanced scent, while vanilla absolute offers a stronger, purer vanilla aroma. Each has its unique applications in perfumery, cosmetics, and culinary arts, depending on the desired flavour and fragrance characteristics.
Historical Snippets
The history of vanilla spans centuries, with origins rooted in ancient Mesoamerican civilisations. Indigenous peoples of Mexico, particularly the Totonac people, were the first to cultivate and use vanilla as early as the 15th century. They prized it for its rich flavour and medicinal properties, often incorporating it into ceremonial beverages and rituals. Vanilla gained global recognition when Spanish conquistadors encountered it during their explorations in the 16th century, introducing it to Europe. Initially reserved for royalty and nobility, vanilla became increasingly popular across the continent, particularly in France, where it was used to flavour chocolates, pastries, and perfumes. Over time, techniques for cultivation and extraction advanced, leading to the widespread availability of vanilla products.
PLEASE REMEMBER
This absolute is very viscous (thick) and will need to be gently heated to be able to pour. Generally this product is procured by Natural Perfumers who mix this with a perfume base (alcohol) as this absolute will not disperse in a carrier oil. Vanilla Absolute does not mix in carrier oils although it will over time impart its amazing aroma. It does mix in 95% grade perfumers ethanol and as such is used by Natural Perfumers.
How To Use
Diffuse: Add a few drops to a diffuser to disperse around the room
Topically: Dilute essential oil with any carrier oil at a 2.5% ratio. This equates to 2.5ml essential oil/oils in total mixed with 100ml of chosen carrier oil. 1ml of essential oil is approximately 20-22 drops of oil. Decant into a roller or glass bottle with eye dropper to apply easily or a larger bottle if using for massage. Please note this dilution rate is for adults and children over the age of 6. More information on children and essential oils is on our blog page. Essential Oils should not be used directly on the skin without mixing first with a carrier oil
Inhalation: Add 1-2 drops essential oil to a tissue and inhale at a distance while ensuring that the oil does not come into direct contact with the skin. Alternatively, you can smell the oil directly from the bottle.
Shelf Life
Our freshly decanted Absolutes, Resins & Resinoids will last for 3-4 years minimum from when you open your amber glass bottle if stored correctly.
Primary Storage Considerations: Keep away from direct light (U.V. radiation). Keep in the amber glass bottle with lid tightly closed. Only open when you need to and decant into a smaller "working" amber glass bottle if possible (and label so you know what is in it). This is to reduce oxidation.
Secondary Storage Considerations: Keep in a refrigerator at around 4 degrees celsius.
