Our sense of smell is a remarkable and often under appreciated aspect of our sensory experience. The olfactory system is directly connected to the brain's limbic system, which plays a crucial role in our emotions and memory. This connection means that smells can evoke powerful memories and emotional responses.
When we inhale a scent, odour molecules bind to receptors in the nose, which then send signals to the olfactory bulb in the brain. From there, the signals travel to areas involved in emotion, memory, and behaviour. This is why a familiar scent can instantly transport us back to a specific time and place or alter our mood.
On a different note another fascinating process that involves several key mechanisms in the olfactory system is the phenomenon of no longer smelling a scent after a few minutes which is known as olfactory adaptation or olfactory fatigue.

Welcome to this edition of our newsletter where we explore a new addition just arrived, Ginger Lily essential oil (Hydicum Spicatum). Also known as Spiked Ginger Lily, Himalayan Ginger Lily, Butterfly Ginger and Kachur Sugandhi, this tropical plant has stunning white flowers which have a spicy and sweet fragrance.
The essential oil itself is derived from its rhizomes which are the underground stems of the plant. This gives a very “earthy and rooty” aroma which means it won’t be loved by one and all however if you are a fan of Ginger Essential Oil and are fine with the earthiness of this then you will appreciate what this oil has to offer. When it comes to luxurious and enchanting fragrances, jasmine stands out as a timeless favourite. Jasmine Absolute is renowned for its deep, intense aroma, often described as rich, sweet, and exotic. The process to harvest the flowers requires meticulous manual labour – it is estimated that it takes about 8,000 hand-picked blossoms just to produce 1 ml of Jasmine which equates to approximately 700 kg of jasmine flowers being needed to produce 1 kg of absolute.
